Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Basic-Naturals!

Three questions with Danielle Ben-David, Director of Marketing and Sales at Basic-Naturals.

Why did you start your business?

Our business was born out of a personal need for a natural eczema treatment that had to stay powerful and healing results but would not break the bank. My partner/husband suffered from eczema and resisted the dermatologist's recommendation to use cortisone cream. The potential side effects outweighed the relief in his mind.

We had already chosen a path of clean eating (mostly plant-based), eco-friendly home practices, and active living. It didn't make sense to choose a treatment so distant from that lifestyle. So, we set to work mixing natural formulas for our own salve to be used in-house. (Skin Repair) However, word spread, and soon friends and family wanted some too. We expanded to facial care products and eventually body care.

Our research and experimentation led to amazing products, our formulas worked better than anything we had ever used. And so it began... our mission to spread clean and simple skincare formulas focused on health to all. Each product is formulated with 100% natural and skin-benefiting ingredients that balance, rejuvenate and protect your skin. We root ourselves in being "short-list" ingredients and alcohol, fragrance, and preservative-free too!

We love helping our community which now extends through sales online past the CT borders and pride ourselves on customers glowing reviews and skin.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our best-selling products fall under the Facial Care category. So many people switch to Oil Cleansing with our product Clean Face and realize how nourishing this process is for their skin and how protecting and hydrating rather than scrubbing and stripping away oils, can really transform and rejuvenate.

To narrow that down, I would tell a newbie to start with Clean Face, Healthy Face Toner, and Healthy Face Antiaging Moisturizer. They are "Must Haves" when converting to Clean Skin Care products. (Add a lip balm for a complete refresh!)

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

As a small business with a tiny team, we have had to reimagine our business over the past year-plus. While we used to meet new customers every few days at farmers' market events throughout Fairfield County, we have suspended in-person event participation until every member of our household qualifies for the COVID vaccine.

We believe that is the best way to protect ourselves and our community. So, we have turned to grow our business online and place more effort in building better communication strategies with our customers and offering sales; as well as selling through stores near and far. We thank all the returning customers for their faith in us and support of our brand; and the stores that continue to stock their shelves with our products!

Danielle would like to nominate EcoEvolution, Nutty Bunny, and Unbakeables to be featured next!
