Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Rica the Artist!

Four questions with Rica Mendes, founder of Rica the Artist and Yaffa Beauty by Rica.

Why did you start your business?

I had made a big career change - from corporate project management to cosmetology. I felt that if I was going to make such a big shift, to give myself more control over my life, my schedule, and do something I was passionate about, I had to go all in. I assisted and worked for some wonderful salons, but deep down, I knew I needed to own my work.

What is your best-selling product/service?

My balayage, or handpainted highlights, are my best-selling service, though I’m also known for my vivid and fashionable colors. My best-selling product is the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lavender Mint (and now, Tea Tree Hemp), a line of Shampoo & Conditioners.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I support as many as I can when I can. For lunch, a go-to is Miss Barbara Jeans located right next to me.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

My salon is not your typical Fairfield County salon. It has a boutique vibe, with eclectic artwork and decor, and is meant to not only be professional, but comfortable. A salon is meant to allow the guest to relax, but so often, they are so fancy and minimal that they can feel sterile and untouchable. I didn’t want that. I wanted it to be a unique experience.
