Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Stylish Spoon!

Four questions with Ilana Eck, founder of Stylish Spoon.

Why did you start your business?

When I was a new mom I couldn’t eat gluten, dairy, or soy. I needed something nutrient-dense that I could eat with one hand while holding a baby. I started making baked OatMEAL Cups. I kept them in the freezer and each morning I would pop them in the microwave for 1 minute and breakfast was done.

They brought joy back into eating and made the morning so easy, so I wanted to share them with others.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our signature product is our Baked OatMEAL Cup. Many families do subscriptions for the OatMEAL Cups, getting between 12-48 delivered per month, and eat them for breakfast, school snacks, or dessert (the chocolate flavor is especially good!).

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We love using local ingredients! We sweeten all of our baked goods with organic maple syrup from Finding Home Farms in Middletown, NY, or with honey from Red Bee in Weston.

We use organic produce in the season flavors of our OatMEAL Cups from Fort Hill Farm, Riverbank Farm, Sport Hill Farm, Geremia Farms, Woodland Farm, and Rose’s Berry Farm.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

I never imagined we would have a retail pickup shop. Before the pandemic, we planned to launch our products in major natural foods retailers but we pivoted once the pandemic started and I am so glad we did.

Selling direct to customers at local farmers markets, online and at our new retail shop gives us the opportunity to talk more about healthy eating and why we do what we do. It also allows us to be more connected to our customers and feels much more rewarding.

Ilana would like to nominate Affogato to be featured next - "They carry our baked goods and they are a great local coffee shop on Washington street!"
