Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT Black Bird Studios!
Three questions with Kathy Lechler, founder of Black Bird Studios.
Why did you start your business?
Black Bird Studio was started back in 2009 when I decided to move away from a career in publishing and decided to begin freelancing. I was a very competent Graphic Designer and Art Director and a fine artist. Having studied Illustrations in Graphic Design at The School of Visual Arts in New York City and upon graduating with a degree in Fine Arts, I found a lot of freelance work in New York City. My fine art business has been always evolving. I am a landscape/seascape impressionistic artist and also paint anything in nature. Many of my paintings are of shore birds, anything along our beautiful eastern seashore. I’ve visited many national parks in search of the next landscape or seascape.
Today, Black Bird Studio is mostly a fine art studio and I paint on commission and produce notecards from my artwork. I started my business because of my love for art and the beauty of nature that surrounds our community in Connecticut.
What is your best-selling product/service?
How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?
The main local business that I support to “support my art habit” is Jerry’s Artarama on Main Street in Norwalk. They are a wealth of products for any artist, beginner, or professional.
Kathy would like to nominate Jerry’s Artarama to be featured next!
