After six-plus hour standoff, Norwalk Police take local man into custody

On July 11, 2021 at approximately 10:08 p.m., Norwalk Police Officers took Robert Lemay into custody, ending a standoff that lasted over six and a half hours.

At approximately 3:27 p.m. earlier that day, Norwalk Police Department Combined Dispatch received a report that Robert Lemay was intoxicated and angry, had made several threats to use a shotgun against himself and others, and retreated into his residence alone. Lemay had multiple firearms registered to him.

A large police response followed, including the Tactical Response Team, and Hostage Negotiations Team. Officers from adjoining agencies assisted Norwalk Police Officers, due to the need of significant manpower. After many tense hours Lemay eventually cooperated with Norwalk Officers and turned himself over to the police. Weapons and ammunition were removed from the home.

The Norwalk Police Department is proud of the work of all of the police officers involved in the incident, from patrol to various specialized units. The various neighboring police departments assisted the City of Norwalk, helping to mitigate the large need for resources and manpower. The Norwalk Community assisted our department as well, waiting patiently while several roads were closed during the standoff, which ended peacefully and without physical injury.
