Friday, Feb. 5, 7:30 p.m. First Friday Film Series returns
with “The Big Lebowski”
The library’s new First Friday Film Series curator, Chris X. Carroll, hosts his debut screening: “The Big Lebowski” (1998) [R] 117 minutes. This event is free and open to all.
One of the most confounding yet rewarding aspects of Zen is its embrace of the contradictions of life, the universe and everything. Jeff Lebowski, aka The Dude, is seen by many viewers as the epitome of a Zen master. Indeed, much of the Big Lebowski centers on the mixups between the Dude and a different Jeff Lebowski, this one a rich philanthropist paraplegic veteran. Yin and Yang, these two, both different sides of the same coin. It’s not even clear which of them is the titular Big Lebowski. Visit piermontlibrary.org for further details on this film.
Sunday, Feb. 7, 3 - 5 p.m. Artist’s Reception for
“Climate Change; Under the Bridge” by Brett De Palma
For the month of February, the Piermont Library will exhibit the vibrantly colored paintings of Nyack resident Brett DePalma. DePalma lived, worked, and taught in New York City from the early 1980's, exhibiting with artists such as Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Kiki Smith. He has taught art at the School of Visual Arts, Princeton University, and an Aids Day Treatment Clinic in New York. DePalma describes his work as, "visual puzzles of a sardonic, satirical, psychedelic, arcane nature with a psycho-social synthesis. Once solved, they reveal images conjuring familiar universal truths, found in everything from nature to music and ultimately reaching to the human condition."
