Historic Property For Sale: Site of Mark Twain’s Former Redding Home Featured in Wall Street Journal

Recently, the Wall Street Journal's house of the day featured the site of Mark Twain's former Redding home, which the author built in 1908 on over 300 acres and named "Stormfield."

Twain spent a scant two years in the home but managed to host plenty of famous figures during his time there, including close friend and fellow author William Dean Howells and Helen Keller. According to records, during one six month period, Twain welcomed close to 181 guests to his home.

All those visits may not have been purely social. It was while living at Stormfield that Twain worked with neighbors to form the Mark Twain Library Association and, according to the Library's website, raised funds by charging guests to retrieve their luggage and hosting supper dances and benefit concerts.

Twain wrote his first check for the library's construction just before his death in April 1910 and bequeathed to it some 3,000 books from his personal collection. Current owner Jake DeSantis, who is working towards certification as a high school teacher, is a trustee for the Mark Twain Library.

DeSantis and his wife Erika purchased the home in 2003 for $3.45 million dollars, the WSJ reports. The asking price for the stately 5,600 square foot property is $4 million. It features four bedrooms, four full baths, and two half baths along with a three car garage and two-bedroom/one bath guest cottage.
