Susan Malloy: In the Studio at Westport Arts Center

To celebrate Westport resident Susan Malloy's 90th birthday, the Westport Arts Center is pleased to announce Susan Malloy: In The Studio, an exhibition dedicated to her prolific, lifelong career as an artist. Susan Malloy: In The Studio will feature 38 artworks, carefully selected by Ian Berry, Dayton Director, The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College. "It is an honor to work with Susan Malloy and Westport Art Center on this exhibition to celebrate Susan's milestone birthday," said Berry. "There is no better way to celebrate an artist then to bring their work together in an exhibition so all can see works across several decades combined with new paintings made this past year. All of us at the Tang Museum and Skidmore College toast Susan's great accomplishments as an artist and friend of so many." The opening reception for Susan Malloy: In The Studio will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014, from 3-5pm.

Susan Malloy was born and raised in New York City, where she attended the New Lincoln School. She graduated from Skidmore College with a degree in Studio Art, and, afterwards, moved back to NYC and attended the Art Students League. Her time at the league introduced her to the world of emerging artists. There, she worked with such notable artists as Will Barnet and Bob Blackburn. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, seeing the works of art she had studied in her art history classes. In 1956 she attended an art workshop in Positano, Italy, a small town on the Amalfi Coast. Positano opened her eyes to new ways of seeing color, and forever influenced her work. In 1957 she married her Edwin Malloy, and in 1969, they moved with their two children to Westport, CT, where she still lives.

Susan has continued to paint and draw wherever she has lived. She has exhibited in several juried group shows throughout New England, including the Westport Arts Center's last 3 group shows, Home Sweet Home, Foodies, and Love: In The Eye of the Beholder. She has had 11 solo exhibitions at established institutions such as Skidmore College, University of Bridgeport, Greenwich Arts Center, and Harvard University Divinity School.

"Susan is remarkable for many things: her vitality, curiosity, generosity, responsibility to her local communities. She is a world citizen, a great humanitarian, mother, sister, aunt, and great friend to so many, including me," said Helen Klisser During, Visual Arts Director at the Westport Arts Center. "We hope that the exhibition In the Studio will act as a salute and tribute to Susan Malloy, for whom there is no separation between life and art."

The Westport Arts Center would like to thank: The Sun Hill Foundation; Wendy Nylen at Picture This, for her fantastic work framing Susan's art; Susan's niece, Ann Sheffer, and her husband Bill Scheffler, for being with us every step of the way; and Susan's children, Jennifer and Timon, for sharing their wonderful mother with the Westport Arts Center.
