Governor Lamont Unveils New 'Welcome to Connecticut' Interstate Highway Signs

Governor Ned Lamont today introduced new "Welcome to Connecticut" signs that have been installed at seven major entry points along the state's borders. These signs can be seen on I-95 and I-84 entering from New York, I-91, I-84, and I-395 entering from Massachusetts, and I-95 and U.S. Route 6 entering from Rhode Island. Each sign highlights a distinctive aspect of Connecticut’s identity, showcasing the unique opportunities and qualities that define the Nutmeg State.

“These new signs are more than just highway markers—they represent what makes Connecticut truly special,” said Governor Lamont. “We want everyone entering our state to feel an immediate sense of pride in what we excel at, whether it’s crafting the nation’s best pizza, offering world-class meals, winning national championships, or engineering some of the most complex machines in the world. Each sign serves as an invitation to discover all that Connecticut has to offer as one of the best states to live, work, and play.”

Highlights from the New Signs:

Sign A: “Welcome to Connecticut, Home of the Pizza Capital of the United States”

Locations: I-95 and I-84 entering Connecticut from New York

In February 2024, Governor Lamont officially declared Connecticut as the Pizza Capital of the United States with a gubernatorial proclamation. This recognition was further honored when Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro read the proclamation into the Congressional Record in May 2024.

These signs celebrate Connecticut’s rich culinary heritage and invite visitors to explore the state’s renowned pizza culture, which is just one of the many reasons to be proud of living in or visiting Connecticut.

Governor Lamont Unveils New Interstate "Welcome to Connecticut" Signs Highlighting State Pride and Accomplishments

Governor Ned Lamont today announced the installation of new "Welcome to Connecticut" signs at seven key interstate entry points across the state. These signs, strategically placed at borders with New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, are designed to celebrate Connecticut's unique identity and the many opportunities available within the state.

“These signs are more than just markers; they embody the pride we have in Connecticut and all the incredible things we do here,” said Governor Lamont. “Whether it’s our unmatched success in sports, our historic contributions to technology, or our culinary achievements, each sign is an invitation to discover what makes Connecticut one of the best places to live, work, and play.”

Sign B: "Welcome to Connecticut, Home of the Basketball Capital of the World"

Locations: I-91, I-84, and I-395 entering Connecticut from Massachusetts

This sign honors the extraordinary success of the University of Connecticut’s basketball programs. With the UConn Men’s Basketball team securing back-to-back national titles in 2023 and 2024, the combined total of national championships won by UConn’s men’s and women’s teams has reached 17—six more than any other university in the nation. This sign is a proud tribute to Connecticut’s dominance in the world of college basketball.

Sign C: "Welcome to Connecticut, Home of the Submarine Capital of the World"

Location: I-95 entering Connecticut from Rhode Island

Connecticut’s long-standing maritime legacy is celebrated with this sign, which highlights the state's pivotal role in submarine innovation. The submarine was invented in Connecticut by David Bushnell in 1775, laying the foundation for modern naval technology. Groton-based General Dynamics Electric Boat has been the primary submarine manufacturer for the U.S. Navy since the early 20th century, with the U.S. Navy’s primary submarine base located in New London.

Sign D: "Welcome to Connecticut, Stop for a Bite in the Foodie Capital of New England"

Location: U.S. Route 6 entering Connecticut from Rhode Island

This sign celebrates Connecticut’s thriving culinary scene, which has garnered increasing national recognition. The state’s reputation as a food destination was solidified when Chef David Standridge won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast in 2024. In recognition of these achievements, Governor Lamont proclaimed Connecticut the “Foodie Capital of New England” in February 2024.

These new interstate signs were designed and installed following federal regulations and guidelines to ensure both safety and visibility. The project was managed by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, with input from the Connecticut Office of Tourism to align the messaging with the state’s broader marketing and communications efforts.

“These signs are a testament to Connecticut’s pride, excellence, and our commitment to making a great first impression,” said Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “They not only enhance the travel experience for residents and visitors but also highlight the best of what Connecticut has to offer.”

Anthony Anthony, Connecticut’s chief marketing officer, added, “Connecticut’s rebranding is all about showing the world what we do and why we do it. These signs are a visible reminder that Connecticut is a place where anyone can build a fulfilling life, family, career, and more. We’re proud to welcome everyone with these powerful messages.”

The signs feature the "C+T" state logo, which is part of Connecticut’s "Make It Here" campaign, launched in 2023 to strengthen state pride and promote Connecticut as a top destination. The campaign contributed to a record year for Connecticut's travel industry in 2023, with nearly 68 million visitors and an $18.5 billion economic impact.
