Meadow Ridge in Redding Supports Local Families in Need

Local Seniors Support Vulnerable Families in Fairfield County

Meadow Ridge senior living community in Redding is doing its part to help make sure no area families feel hungry or cold this holiday season.

For more than five years, the community has organized a food drive leading up to the holidays, with a van full of proceeds going to the Redding Social Services food pantry. The initiative was originally championed by resident Marjorie Nichols, who’d load up her station wagon and deliver the donations.

Since then, the idea has transformed into a true community-wide initiative. Throughout November and into early December, Meadow Ridge residents and team members donate nonperishable food items, gift cards, and, when possible, checks made payable to Redding Social Services to help assist with heating or other costs. Drop-off bins are located throughout the campus, with donations eventually being loaded up and delivered to the pantry.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the community will also host a holiday party for approximately 50 guests. While attendees will have the opportunity to dine on chef-prepared seasonal treats, mingle with residents and other guests, and explore renovations at the community, they’ll also be invited to donate items for the food pantry.

According to Redding Social Services, there are 87 local SNAP recipients (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). In the last month alone, the majority of visits to the food pantry have been by seniors, and last year, seniors made up nearly half of all local households on the Energy Assistance program.

Are you interested in learning how Meadow Ridge residents and team members are helping spread the true spirit of the holidays, or would you like to be there as Meadow Ridge delivers their donations at the food pantry next month?
