Coastal Flood Warnings issued for western Long Island Sound, Wind Advisories for coastal Connecticut and Flood Watches for southern Connecticut

A low-pressure system currently intensifying near the Georgia coast is forecast to move northeast tonight and develop into a moderately strong Northeaster overnight.  The storm is forecast to be located near the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula by tomorrow morning (see tracking map).  The storm is then forecast to move NNE across our area and then out to our north by Saturday night.  The following forecast is based on a blend of the GFS and NAM models:

Tonight: Rain and wind developing from southwest to northeast just after midnight with lows in the upper 30’s to near 40 F.   Northeast winds are forecast to increase by daybreak Saturday gusting to 30 MPH at times along the coast with rain falling moderate to heavy at times especially in southern and eastern CT.  Some very minor coastal flooding is possible in Western Long Island Sound at the time of high tide just after midnight tonight.

Saturday Morning: Rain and wind during the morning with ENE winds that may gust to 40 - 50 MPH at times along the coast and 25 - 35 MPH at times inland.  Some minor urban flooding is possible especially in southern and eastern CT.  The gusty winds may also cause some power outages from falling trees or limbs especially in Southern CT.  Minor coastal flooding is expected during high tide around 11:00 AM in eastern Long Island Sound.

Saturday Afternoon: Moderate coastal flooding is expected around 1:00 PM in western Long Island Sound.  The rain and wind are expected to begin tapering down by mid-Afternoon.  Total rainfall is generally forecast to range from 1” – 2” however a few locations could receive up to 2” – 4” depending on the exact track of this storm.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is continuing to monitor conditions.
