Ancona's Life In A Bottle: Kyle Sips and Chats About Natural Summer Reds From Texas

From the North Fork of Long Island to Texas! Check out this week's Life In A Bottle featuring 2019 Southold Farm "Basics of Life" Red Blend
and 2020 Southold Farm "Forgotten Dreams" Sangiovese.

Ancona's Wine Specialist Kyle Martinez says, "Natural wine from Texas. Seems closed-minded of me, but I never imagined I’d see those words together in a sentence! And yet, here we are, featuring not one, but two delicious summer red wines from Southold Farm & Cellar based in Fredericksburg, TX."

Not originally from Texas, Southold Farm is true to its name, the wine originated in Southold, a small town on the North Fork of Long Island.

Kyle explains, "When Regan and Carey Meador started Southold Farm & Cellar in 2012 on Long Island’s North Fork, they assumed they’d be putting down both the figurative and literal roots. They quickly outgrew their space on the Island, however, and any expansion efforts were stifled by local zoning regulations. A Texas native, Regan had visited vineyards and wineries on trips home to Northern Texas’ High Plains region, and together they decided that it would be the future home of Southold."

Kyle's "Basics of Life" notes:

With bright blackberry and raspberry, candied red currants, and dried earth and herbs on the nose, this red blend is inviting and exciting. On the palate, the fruit is juicy and mouthwatering, with more dusty earth and savory umami that keeps drawing me back for another sip. The finish is longer than the body leads me to expect, as leathery tannins and dried woody underbrush linger behind the lively fruit. Exceptional with a slight chill, I’d just as happily drink this on my balcony on a summer evening as I would with barbecue (Hall at Southold recommends brisket; I couldn’t agree more!)

Kyle's  "Forgotten Dreams" notes:

I can’t help but think “mmm…Sangiovese” when I smell this. Warm dark cherry and sun-dried tomato, classic tomato leaf, and a bit of tarry, earthy perfume are clear but restrained on the nose. On the palate, the concentrated fruit and savory herbaceous notes harmonize beautifully with dried wildflowers and gently chewy tannins before the long, dusty finish. In typical Sangiovese fashion, the Forgotten Dreams would be perfect with a classic margarita pizza (with ample fresh, torn basil, obviously), balsamic-marinated portobellos, or grilled, herbed lamb chops.
