Redding Lifts Mask Mandate as COVID Cases Decline

Redding Mask Order Lifted

The daily rate of COVID-19 cases has declined regionally and in Redding they have dropped below 10 per 100,000 for three weeks in a row. As a result, the mask mandate in Redding will be lifted effective Friday October 15, 2021. Our current daily case rate is 7.8 per 100,000.

State mandates continue to require masks in schools and for unvaccinated individuals in indoor public spaces. Face coverings are optional for fully vaccinated individuals.

Even though the mask mandate has been lifted we strongly recommend all Redding residents, and especially for those at higher risk of severe COVID-19, to continue mask wearing when indoors in public areas, and when distancing cannot be maintained.

We ask for your cooperation when visiting Redding establishments and locations where some have chosen to maintain the full mask policy for the safety of their staff and customers.

Booster Shots (Moderna)

At this writing (10/15/21) vaccine experts have advised the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recommend authorization of an extra half dose of Moderna. This is one step in the approval process. Like Pfizer, the panel voted to give the booster shot at least six months after the second dose to those 65 years and older and to adults under 65 who are at high risk of severe COVID-19 or severe complications because of their jobs or living conditions or underlying medical conditions.

A federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory panel is expected to meet Oct. 20 to weigh endorsing the additional Moderna dose before it becomes available to the public. The CDC does not have to accept the panel’s recommendation, but it usually does.

Booster Shots (J & J)

The advisory panel is meeting again (10/15/21) to consider Johnson & Johnson’s application for a follow up dose and review data on mixing vaccines and boosters.

Booster Shots (Pfizer)

People aged 18 and up who are considered immunocompromised, those age 65 and older, residents aged 18 years and older living in long-term settings, and people aged 50-64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot at least 6 months after completing the 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine shot series.

People aged 18-49 years with underlying medical conditions along with people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure may receive the booster shot at least 6 months after receiving the 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine shot series.

Underlying medical conditions includes cancer, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, stroke, obesity, liver disease, and substance abuse disorder.

Those who are considered at high risk for COVID-19 exposure include:

• First responders (healthcare workers, firefighters, police, congregate care staff)
• Education staff (teachers, support staff, daycare workers)
• Food and agricultural workers
• Grocery store workers
• Public transit workers

Where to Get COVID-19 Booster Shots

Just about every pharmacy (see list below) in the area as well as Costco, Walmart, and Big Y carry the COVID-19 vaccines. Many have received their vaccination at these locations. If you qualify for the booster shot, you can schedule your appointment with them. To set up an appointment use this vaccine finder: https://covidvaccinefinder.ct.gov/?query=06896 When you go for a shot you will need to bring your vaccination card or documentation demonstrating your vaccination record. Vaccinators need to verify that individuals receiving their booster are doing so at least 6 months after receiving the Pfizer primary series.

Vax Van

Redding has Vax Van clinics scheduled for every Sunday through November 21st at the Redding Community Center from 1-4pm. All 3 brands of vaccine will be available for first and second doses. Booster shots are available for Pfizer recipients who qualify. No appointment is needed.
