Jeffrey M. Nicastro, MD, FACS, FCCM will oversee the vision and integration of all surgical services at Western Connecticut Health Network
Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN) announced the appointment of Jeffrey M. Nicastro, MD, FACS, FCCM as the new Network Chair of Surgery. Dr. Nicastro will provide strategic and clinical leadership for all aspects of WCHN’s Department of Surgery.
Dr. Nicastro will be responsible for setting the strategic vision for integrated surgical services at WCHN — a growing network that currently includes Danbury Hospital, New Milford Hospital, and Norwalk Hospital. He will also be responsible for the leadership and engagement of all WCHN medical staff surgeons, including surgeons in independent, private practices and employed by the Western Connecticut Medical Group (WCMG).
“Dr. Nicastro joins us at an exciting time as WCHN enhances, expands, and integrates surgical services through our coming together with Health Quest,” said Richard Freeman, MD, ScD, MPH, FACP and Chief Clinical Officer for WCHN. “Dr. Nicastro will ensure the highest standard of excellence in the care and safety for all of our surgical patients.”
Dr. Nicastro is a general surgeon with a certificate of added qualification in surgical critical care. His executive leadership experience in surgery — especially clinical program development and quality assurance — and his academic leadership in graduate and undergraduate medical education made him an ideal choice for WCHN’s Network Chair of Surgery.

Dr. Nicastro joins WCHN from Northwell Health (Northwell) — a 23 hospital system — where he served as Vice President, Clinical Services, Surgery Service Line; Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery; System Chief, Division of Acute Care Surgery; Associate Program Director, General Surgery Residency; and Associate Professor of Surgery for the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Dr. Nicastro also served as the program director for the general surgery residency program spanning North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Most recently, he was in a supervisory role across all three general surgery residencies at Northwell. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the advanced clinical experience in surgery at the Zucker School of Medicine.
Dr. Nicastro graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. He received his Medical Doctorate from the New York University School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University/Bellevue Medical Center and subsequently served four years in the United States Navy. He also completed a Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine.
