Spring has arrived! Put it in your step with Master the Green
Local resident Joe Lane (aka Master of the Green) brings the green, aids, and expertise to your home. When we’re done and you’ve practiced the basics at home, 2-putt greens will be the rule rather than a miracle for 2019. Call (203) 917-8306 or email j.lanedeo@gmail.com
Why do golfers, writ large, spend whatever practice time they have hitting drivers and fairway woods? Good question. Working with numerous terminally committed amateurs, busy business people, who spent anywhere from $12,000 to $50,000 with me over the 15 years I ran the Shooting 78 golf camps, this is what I learned most of my students believed.
If I can hit long off the tee, and stay in the fairway, I’m home free.
Often, when a student and I were playing/practicing on a course, if the student hit a not so hot drive and I hit one 275-280 in the fairway, I’d hear this.
If I could hit ‘em like that, I could shoot 78 most of the time.
Almost always, I’d offer to trade shots, let them hit mine, I’d hit theirs. As you might imagine, that didn’t help them, at all. Almost every single time, their next shot did not land on the green. Their shot onto the green most often left them 25 feet or more from the cup. Their first putt at the cup left them 5-6 feet, or more away. I can’t say no one ever made that next putt, however, in those 15 years, I could count all times they made it on my fingers and toes.
The math works out like this. If you reduced three putting by 75%, you’d save 7.5 strokes per round. That’s going from a 95 to a 77 or 78. If learned to put your shots from 10-12 feet off the green within 5 feet of the cup and made just half of those, that’s another 1.5 strokes per round. That gets you to 75-76. BTW, you can master getting those just off the green shots up close in your hallway as well.
The key to either is practicing a few minutes, 10, 15, three to four times a week. Realistically, that’s only gonna happen if you have a simple home practice station you can jump on whenever a few free minutes pop up. Very much like learning to play the piano, if you don’t have one in your home, you’ll never have enough practice time to learn to play Chop Sticks.
If you have ambitions that 2019 is to be a banner year for your game, let us show you how.
