Redding Republicans Sponsor Matthew Berry Memorial Scholarship.

The Redding Republican Town Committee will sponsor the Matthew Berry Memorial Scholarship to be granted annually to a college bound graduating senior. The announcement was made today.

The scholarship will award $1,000 to a qualifying applicant who is a legal resident of Redding. Funding for the scholarship is being provided by the Berry Family. Applications are available at Joel Barlow High School (contact Debbi Farrell) and at Town Hall. Applications may also be downloaded on the Redding Republicans website, http://www.reddingrepublicans.org/scholarship.html. Applications must be submitted by April 21st.

The Matthew Berry Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Matthew L. Berry, a 2009 graduate of Joel Barlow High School, who loved America, was intensely interested in the political process, and was committed to participating as an engaged, informed citizen.

Matthew graduated from Tulane University in 2013 with a degree in political science. While at Tulane, Matt served as President of the Tulane College Republicans. During his college career, he interned with both PepsiCo’s Government Affairs Group and the Republican National Committee. Upon graduation, he worked with Campaign Mail and Data, Inc., providing support to Republican campaigns, and from there moved to Target Point Consulting, a full-service public opinion and micro targeting firm focused on Republican issues. As his father, Leonard Berry, commented, “Matt loved his country. He was a voracious reader of political history as well as current political non-fiction. He believed that our country could improve going forward by learning from the past. His favorite U.S. president was Calvin Coolidge. Politics and the direction the United States is headed was important to Matthew.”

Of the scholarship, Michael Thompson, Redding Republicans Chair, stated, “We are thrilled and honored that the Berry family has chosen us as sponsors of this wonderful scholarship award in memory of Matthew. He was an exceptionally bright and talented young man who was truly committed to the ideals of good government.”
