Super Third Saturdays at The Aldrich on Saturday, March 21 from 11 am to 7 pm features Tree Spa and artistic as well as musical performances!
This event is FREE thanks to support from Fairfield County Bank.
Join us for a full day of food, activities in nature, relaxation, and three special performances, including two artists in the exhibition Weather Report. Amazing Ackee will be on site with savory Jamaican delicacies for purchase. Veracious Brewing Company (Monroe, CT) will host a tasting of maple-infused beer and other selections.
11 am to 1 pm: Family Activity: Winter Sun Cyanotypes with Lisa Scroggins
Collect natural materials from and around the maple trees with artist Lisa Scroggins to create sun prints that capture even the smallest details of these magnificent trees! Join artist Colin McMullan for a maple tree-tapping demonstration and enjoy cold, refreshing tree juice.
2 pm: Colin McMullan and Exhibitions Director Richard Klein will be sharing conversation over McMullan’s social project, Tree Spa for Urban Forest Healing, featuring a wood-fired maple syrup evaporator.
2 to 6 pm: Colin McMullan will activate Tree Spa for Urban Forest Healing, containing a wood-fired maple syrup evaporator funneling maple-scented steam into a spa experience. We invite participants to bring swimsuits, robes, towels, and sandals and enjoy sitting in the steam of the native forest, including locally tapped maple trees.
3 pm: Sean Salstrom will perform Indefinity Box, a performative sculptural work that reflects on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.
4pm: Participatory performance through the Weather Report galleries with polyphonic pieces by violist, ethnomusicologist, and author Tanya Kalmanovitch.
5 pm: Ravish Momin and Val Jeanty will perform as the duo, Turning Jewels Into Water, named after the notion that water itself will become a precious commodity due to the effects of climate change. The duo transforms ancient rhythms into the digital realms, morphing dance into ritual while absorbing and adapting diverse folkloric traditions into their musical vision.
Snow Date for performances: Sunday, March 22, 2pm to 7 pm.
