Transitioning from Hats to Hope in Downtown Danbury

Once the home of the bustling Mallory Hat Factory, a historical site in downtown Danbury is being reawakened by the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury

The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury and the City of Danbury announce the transformation of a piece of vacant, historic property located at 89 Rose Hill Avenue, where a 20-bed residential facility for women and children in transition operated by the Women’s Center will soon be built. Upon completion, the nearly three-acre campus will include a walking path and a playground for children.

After the Mallory Hat factory closed its doors in 1987 (one of the main reasons Danbury was considered the Hat Capitol of the world) the city assumed ownership. This once-thriving site has been vacant for decades and the City is thrilled that it will once again meet the needs of the community - in a brand new and important way.

“In our search for a suitable property, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton stepped forward. The Danbury City Council unanimously voted to convey the property to the Women’s Center. The location is ideal for our residential facility which will help those in our 13-town area who need our services,” says Patricia Zachman, Women’s Center President & CEO.

“We are proud to support the expansion of the Women’s Center and see this new facility help even more individuals and families. Our community is grateful for the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury and the critical support and services they provide,” said Mayor Mark Boughton.

The Women’s Center has grown into a multi-faceted social service organization, serving the area’s most vulnerable men and women, children and families while educating the community-at-large to create systemic change. The new residential facility will better and more efficiently serve the women and children in transition.

The Center provides free and confidential services to over 30,000 individuals each year - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year - through our Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Resource Services programs. For 45 years, the Women’s Center has been speaking up and speaking out for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Speaking up and speaking out with education about non-violence, safety, and respect in our 13-town community.
