August 1, 2012, Ridgefield, CT-- There are nearly 16 million women business owners in the U.S., including many in Fairfield County, but no local common resource for sourcing and supporting their businesses.
Until now: Consult-a-Mom, LLC, an organization for “mompreneurs,” was recently founded by Fairfield County resident Laura Avery, a professional model, mom, and business owner herself.
“It’s nearly impossible for entrepreneurial moms who are responsible for their families and homes to simultaneously start businesses from scratch and come up with the capital (and time) to effectively advertise and market their businesses,” said Avery. “Consult-a-Mom gives mompreneurs a place to feature their businesses and services, while providing the community with a location to source and support mom-owned businesses.”
The only resource of its kind, Consult-a-Mom currently has over 25 local businesses listed, with others being steadily added. Avery says a reasonably priced online listing on Consult-a-Mom is more cost effective than traditional advertising, especially for women who are contending with start-up costs for a new home-based business. "It's wonderful to have a concise, professional online outlet to advertise my business," said Tesa Baum, owner of Tesa Baum Reiki in Ridgefield. "Consult-a-Mom has given me the visibility to help grow my business, while allowing me to interact and support other local working moms."
In addition to being an online community for “mompreneurs,” clients and customers also have a clear, easy-to-navigate site to support local mom-owned businesses. Avery will be featuring promotional specials and incentives on the site to encourage community use.
Consult-a-Mom also offers its members the opportunity to interact with one another, build professional networks, and refer business to one another. “Women are starting small businesses at twice the rate of men,” Avery said. “We all understand that it’s difficult to juggle demands and duties for both kids and customers. It’s so rewarding to be able to help each other, keep business in the community, and watch each other succeed.”
