Engage in a lively walk and talk in the galleries with Jack Whitten and exhibitions director Richard Klein. Learn about Whitten's long and rich artistic practice, the important role he played in the Museum's founding decade, and his exhibition on view, Evolver, which includes a painting that was in The Aldrich's early collection and newly created work.
Jack Whitten: Evolver marks the first solo museum exhibition of the artist's painting since 2007. The exhibition is part of a year-long series featuring artists whose work played a significant role in the Museum's early history. Evolver will focus on new works from 2013 to 2014, a period that has so far proven to be one of ambitious experimentation with, and reinvestigation of, a range of familiar Whitten motifs. The exhibition includes ten paintings borrowed from both the artist's studio and private collections; Whitten's 1971 painting Shadows, which was once in the Museum's collection, will return on loan to be exhibited in an adjacent space, providing a touchstone from a seminal stylistic period.
Jack Whitten: Evolver is supported, in part, by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Art Works. Major support for Museum operations has been provided by members of The Aldrich Board of Trustees and by the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation.
