A message from Blue Jay Orchards ~ one of our favorite apple picking orchards:
As Blue Jay Orchards in Bethel, CT, begins its 80th year, we must face challenges from Mother Nature. Due to heavy summer rains in 2013, and a winter THAT never seemed to end in the beginning of 2014, some fruit buds on our trees did not develop into blossoms. The light amount of blossoms has given Blue Jay a smaller than normal apple crop this year.
The challenge for Blue Jay Orchards this season is to offer our loyal customers with the best possible experience. For this reason, Blue Jay will only be open for apple picking on Saturdays and Sundays, along with Columbus Day. Throughout the pick your own season, previously picked field crates of apples will be placed in picking areas. This way our customers can supplement the apples picked from our trees with varieties that did not grow as well this season, or have been picked earlier.
Wagon rides through the orchard will begin Saturday, September 13. The 20-minute ride is a slow paced trip through our orchard with education signs to add a little knowledge along the way.
Thank you for all of your support for the past 80 years. We look forward to seeing you in 2014!
