Scotland School Blood Drive: Little Doctors™ Help To Save Lives
On Wednesday, January 27th from 4:00-8:30pm, Scotland Elementary School will be sponsoring our fourth student-run blood drive. On this day, the fifth grade students who have worked to both educate and recruit potential donors, will act as ambassadors for the drive, escorting people to their seats, handing out snacks and juice and entertaining the children of the donors while they wait.
The Little Doctors™ program educates our children about the importance of donating blood and teaches them how to approach people about becoming blood donors. They are taught to respect the trepidation of some donors and realize that donating is not an expectation but a gift. “Giving blood is your decision. It’s your body so it’s your blood. I just want people to know that blood donations save lives,” states Jaden Mahoney, a fifth grade student at Scotland.
“The students are very excited about being part of such an important. It’s yet just another example of how kids, even as young as ten years old, can make a difference in people’s lives,” states Cheryl Osher, a fifth grade teacher at Scotland. “One pint of blood and an hour of your time can make a huge difference in someone else’s life.”
People who are interested in donating must be between the ages of 16 (with a permission from a parent) and 75, one hundred ten pounds or more and in good general health at the time of donation. You may arrive at Scotland Elementary school at 111 Barlow Mountain Road between the hours of 4:00 and 8:30pm on Wednesday, January 27th to donate.
