Ridgefield Symphony Musicians Visit Barlow Mountain Elementary School

Musicians from the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra visited Barlow Mountain Elementary School in Ridgefield this morning and presented a lively interactive program for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. The outreach program was made possible by the efforts of Kathleen Murdock, BMES PTA and Colleen McGuirk, BMES General Music Coordinator.

String quartet members Nina Crothers, Corinne Metter, Gunnar Sahlin, Sue Corey-Sahlin and flutist Kerry Walker, all RSO musicians and music teachers, presented an engaging program tailored to students’ grade level of music education. Familiar pieces with the common theme of “music that tells a story” ranged from Vivaldi’s “Spring” and Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy to “How Far I’ll Go” from the Disney film Moana. The students were attentive and at times enthralled, spontaneously clapping and swaying in time with the music and had questions and enthusiastic comments for the musicians.

The program was timed to coincide with when students will select instruments for the following school year. Educational outreach is part of the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra’s mission to increase the appreciation for music through community involvement for people of all ages and abilities.
