Saint Mary School in Ridgefield (SMS) is collaborating with The Language School, an accredited, Ridgefield based school, to introduce students to American Sign Language (ALS).
“Grade 8 students are taking a 10-week session "Introduction to American Sign Language and an Understanding of the Deaf Culture" during their flex period,” says Amy Dowding, SMS Director of Advancement. “Sign language is said to be the perfect foreign language to teach children, because it is easy to learn, and fun,” she adds.
Taught by Suzanne and LeRoy Terrio, the course is an immersive, "voice-off" approach, based on Dr. Bill Vicar's ASL University. The class is designed so that when the students enter the room, they are fully immersed in a non-hearing environment.
Elizabeth Manno, SMS Assistant Principal, and Grade 8 Homeroom teacher remarked, "Our Grade 8 students have fully embraced their experience learning American Sign Language. Their rate of language acquisition has been rapid and truly remarkable and their enthusiasm is inspiring.’
Manno says that it isn't uncommon to see the students practicing ASL among themselves throughout the day. “As a teacher, it has been so rewarding to witness this very unique opportunity for student growth!"
