Step inside Recess Playworks!

Three questions with Kelsey Rollinson, owner of Recess Playworks.

What do you want the community to know? Are there ways for the community to help you and other local businesses to prosper?

We want to let the community know that we are open! And that we are a safe, quiet co-working space for adults and a great learning space for kids with creative, challenging, and fun classes and activities. We set out to be the solution to the work-life balance, giving working parents a comfortable place to network and get their work done while their children are engaged in enriching activities -not on a device! The best way to help us and other businesses is to spread the word! We love it when our customers tell friends and members of their community about us and it is very important to share those experiences on social media! Any reviews or posts with pictures at Recess PlayWorks helps us reach more people. Word of mouth and positive recommendations for any business is the best form of advertising and it is so easy to do.

Are you offering any new products, or ways for customers to purchase your products or services that are popular during this crisis?

This crisis has made every business have to pivot to stay viable. We opened at the end of February and when the lockdown came mid-March, we had to change our whole strategy as well as the products and services we can offer. We had already started holding art classes at Recess PlayWorks during the short time we were open and when the Covid-19 quarantine hit, we came up with the “ART BOX” program. We knew people were scared to leave their houses, so we would deliver a box to a customer’s doorstep that contained all the materials needed for 5 days of art projects which the kids would complete in a Zoom class with our art teacher. The kids loved seeing other kids and their friends every day at class and parents were thrilled to get a reliable hour each day when the kids were engaged in an activity so they could get work done. It was so successful, we are relaunching it this fall!

Are there certain individuals or organizations that supported you and your business through this trying time?

We worked with the Women’s Business Development Council (WBDC) from the early stages of our business planning and their team was extremely helpful during COVID. They were instrumental in laying out resources available to help small businesses and what was required to apply for them. In addition, White Horse Consulting our social media and marketing team, helped get the word out about our virtual offerings and programs we launched during the Covid-19 quarantine. We were a new business when the shut-down happened, so it was especially challenging for us to let people know we existed and Elena Klopfer at White Horse Consulting was instrumental in helping us spread the word.
