George A. Frates Jr., 84, parishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Ridgefield, has died

George A. Frates Jr., “Chub”, 84, of Danbury, passed away on December 23, 2020. He was the devoted and loving husband of Barbara (Merola) Frates.
 
A gentle and honorable man devoted to his family, Mr. Frates was born in Weymouth, MA on April 9, 1936; the son of Ellen (Anderson) and George A. Frates Sr.
 
Mr. Frates is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara and their children: Terry Ellen Cigno and her husband, Dr. Thomas Cigno of Ridgefield CT, George A. Frates III and his wife, Lisa of Virginia Beach,VA, John A. Frates and his wife, Melissa of Brewster, NY, and William P. Frates and his wife, Anna of Ridgefield, CT. Mr. Frates is also survived by 9 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a brother, Joseph A. Frates as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 
 
In addition to his parents, Mr. Frates was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ellen Ross.

Mr. Frates was a graduate of Tufts University where he played varsity football and met his wife Barbara. After graduating, Mr. Frates went on to serve as an officer in the US Navy. 
 
A resident of Danbury for the past 9 years, Mr. Frates also resided in Harrison, New York and Somers, NY.  He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton Church of Ridgefield and previously St. Joseph Church of Somers. Mr. Frates was the proprietor and owner of George A. Frates Jr. Appraisals for 50 years.
 
In his spare time, he enjoyed coaching youth football teams and was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his large family -  man of few words who delighted in a good joke and had a huge heart.  
 
Due to the COVID 19 restrictions affecting all of us at this time, a private funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Ridgefield.
