What makes you crack a smile in Ridgefield? Meet Ellen Burns, owner of Books on the Common

Summer Smiles in Ridgefield

Enjoying summer days close to home, at events and venues unique to your hometown, are some of the most memorable experiences in life (plus, you can get cozy in your own bed at the end of a fun-filled day).

Our series “What makes you crack a smile” highlights the local people, places and events that make our community an enjoyable place to live.

Get your flip-flops and summer ON and find out what makes Ellen Burns, owner of Books on the Common, crack a smile!

Tell us about your favorite summertime destination in Ridgefield

For dining outdoors (which is all we’re doing still, due to Covid), I love Sarah’s Wine Bar/Bernard’s, sitting in the garden. It’s a beautiful setting and the food is always spectacular.

What community event do you look forward to attending? How does it make you feel?

The Memorial Day parade, and the Halloween Walk on Main Street. Both are such nice, small-town events and make me happy that I chose to move here in 1983.

What summer activity in Ridgefield makes you crack a smile?

Our [Books on the Common] Find Waldo in Ridgefield event! We did it this year for the first time since the Pandemic started, and we were so happy to host it again this year! So much fun for the kids and their parents - a screen-free activity with no batteries required!

Do you have a cherished memory of summer in Ridgefield?

Sitting and reading on our deck and watching the wildlife (right now, it’s the hummingbirds zooming around and on my feeder), and the annual Memorial Day party at the Gelfman’s. Nels and Mary are both gone now, but the next generation is keeping the tradition going!
