Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Paperboy Roasting Company!

Four questions with Joshua Chang, founder of Paperboy Roasting Company.

Why did you start your business?

The larger the coffee industry has become, the only way for global coffee distributors to meet demand is by diminishing quality. But, this does not honor all the hard work from seed to cup that is put forth, especially by small family-owned farms around the world. It is to honor these farms and to honor the individual flavor profiles of each coffee cherry and bring that to people in our town. And we’d be lying if a big part of it was so that we would always have access to great coffee ourselves!

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our best seller currently is either our Morning Route blend which is so easy to drink with chocolate and pecan notes with zero bitterness or our Coffee Flight, a sampling of each of what we have to offer.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We have reached out to various local businesses to try to collaborate and support each other. We do not believe in competition but in working together to help each other, succeed together. We are still a new company and so we are yet to get any takers, but how great would it be to collaborate with Deborah Ann’s on a Morning Route Ice Cream, or to have a Funny Pages Malted Shake at Prime Burger? Perhaps a single origin Brazil flavored Cake pop at the Cake Box or maybe even an Extra Extra Espresso Martini at Tequila Escape?

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

As opposed to many business models, our growth plan is to stay as local as possible. This will allow us to try and maintain as much of a person-to-person relationship that seems to be harder to find. It’s the reason we’re called Paperboy Roasting. In times past, your paperboy was usually a kid you knew in your neighborhood, waking you up with the morning news. So, grab a cup, and let us help wake you up with a delicious cup of coffee!

Josh would like to nominate Lily’s Deli to be featured next!
