Branchville Elementary School celebrates first Compost Anniversary on Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, Branchville proclaims April 22 - 26th Earth WEEK

Branchville Elementary School (BES) Principal, Keith Margolus, and the PTA are proud to mark the one-year anniversary of our Path to Zero Waste initiative.

Since committing to compost food waste from the cafeteria on Earth Day last year, we've recovered more than 24,000 lbs of waste, contributing to efforts to combat the staggering amount of food waste in the State of CT. Food waste makes up 22% of the 3.5 million tons of trash in CT. Currently, 800,000 tons of waste is trucked out of the State, due to the fact that all four waste energy plants reached capacity at 2.7 million tons.

“This year, we're excited to expand our focus to the classrooms and front office, with the goal of reducing, recycling, and reusing across all areas at BES,” said Margolus. “The Green Team is leading waste audits and partnering with the Garden Committee for a native seed planting program, empowering students to grow live plants using composted food scraps.”

As Earth Week approaches, let's all make a conscious effort to pack waste-free snacks and lunches, use reusable water bottles, and implement simple measures like double-sided printing and avoiding single-use plastics. Together, we can make a significant impact in reducing waste and preserving our planet.
