Letter to the Editor: Historic Lounsbury House, Protect What You Love

‘We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.’ – Winston Churchill

What a gift to head into a new season in beautiful Ridgefield, a town rich in history, arts & culture, entertainment, shopping, and dining.  It’s no surprise that we’re often voted as one of Connecticut’s top-rated places to live – our community spirit and New England charm are hard to resist.

As Executive Director of Lounsbury House, Ridgefield’s historic community center, I easily attribute much of our town’s vibrancy and beauty to Historic Preservation. Often referred to as our ‘Main Street gem,’ Lounsbury House is a wonderful example of how an older structure was lovingly repurposed and preserved to serve an entire community. Far from being just a beautiful site, historically preserved buildings such as Lounsbury House also contribute to strong property values. Local commerce is driven by residents and visitors alike who are drawn to our town’s charm for shopping, dining, and arts & entertainment. More and more people are making economic choices based on nostalgic appeal, choosing to live, shop, and play in beautiful historic districts.

Without question, Ridgefield is a product of all those who’ve come before us – dedicated people and volunteers who shared a vision and plan for our town’s future – and it’s our obligation now to take care of it for future generations. I invite everyone this season and beyond to Protect What You Love – shop locally, dine in our lovely restaurants, enjoy our vast arts & entertainment community, and invest in Historic Preservation too.
