Longtime Ridgefield resident, Little League honoree, John Murphy Sr., 93, passes

John F. Murphy Sr., 93, of Jensen Beach, FL, formerly of Ridgefield, husband of the late Patricia (Smith) Murphy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Treasure Coast Hospice, Stuart, FL.

John was born in Stamford, CT on September 20, 1930, to Carolyn (Fessenden) and Dennis Murphy. He attended Stamford schools and graduated from Stamford High School.

A retired lineman, Union Rep. and Tree Service Coordinator with Northeast Utilities, John went on to work for 23 years as the amicable and thoughtful manager, at Nauset Knoll Motor Lodge in Orleans, MA (Cape Cod), where long lasting friendships were forged. He was also a U.S. Naval Veteran.

John was an avid reader and had a thirst for knowledge. He enjoyed numerous outdoor activities including softball, golf, camping and sailing. He and his wife, Patricia enjoyed traveling immensely, driving across the country stopping to visit their children and grandchildren along their way. A trip to Ireland and several cruises also provided many wonderful memories.

A resident of Ridgefield for 34 years, he contributed to the community through his many volunteer hours with St. Elizabeth Seton Church and coaching in both Little League and Babe Ruth systems. Ridgefield Little League honored him on Opening Day, many years ago, for his numerous years of coaching and umpiring.

John is survived by seven children, Jack Murphy, Ellen P. Tarsi (Jim), Cindy Bruno (Jim), Mark S. Murphy ( Joyce), Stephen J. Murphy (Michelle), Timothy K. Murphy and Donald E. Murphy (Angela). He also had 14 grandchildren, Emily Murphy, Melisa (Tarsi) Gates, Jim Tarsi Jr., Nicholas Tarsi, Keith Bruno, Colleen (Bruno) Plummer, Michael Murphy, Mary Ellen Murphy-Katarincic, John Murphy, Bryan Murphy, Stephanie Murphy, Kate Murphy, Taylor Murphy, and Logan Murphy. John was also blessed to know his 10 great grandchildren and be loved by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, John is predeceased by his son, Terrence Murphy, and five brothers, Dennis, Kevin, Eugene, Theodore, and Gordon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 10:30 AM in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 520 Ridgebury Road, Ridgefield. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield. The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
