Like poetry? Ever thought about writing your own poems but don’t know where to begin? Or are you a regular writer who’d like some feedback from a professional poet?
Ridgefield CT Pride and Ridgefield Poet Laureate Emerita Barb Jennes are joining forces to host two Pride Poetry writing workshops, a Pride Poetry Contest for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies, and an evening of Pride Poetry at the Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center.
The workshops - slated for Sat., February 22 and Sat., April 12 from 2-3:30 pm in Ridgefield Library’s Randolph Boardroom - will provide support and inspiration to those interested in submitting poems for the Pride Poetry Contest. Participants are invited to bring a poem they have started, or just come ready to brainstorm. Whatever the age or level of expertise, all are welcome to attend one or both workshop sessions.
The theme for the Pride Poetry Contest is “The Pursuit of Happiness: What Does Freedom Mean to You”? Entrants are encouraged to reflect on how this and other “inalienable rights” promised by the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago have remained unfulfilled for marginalized groups like the LGBTQ+ community.
There are three entry categories: students in grades 4-8, students in grades 9-12, and an adult category for those 18+. Each entrant may submit up to 3 poems. Email poems as an attachment created in Word or Google docs to barbjennes@gmail.com. Include your name, age/grade level, town, phone, and personal non-school email address. The submission deadline is May 1st. For more information about the contest, go to www.ridgefieldctpride.com.
