Ridgefield High School Student Spreads Birthday Joy through Service Project

Ridgefield, CT — Fourteen-year-old Sophia Bran, a Ridgefield High School freshman and proud member of Troop 19—Ridgefield’s first all-girl Scouts BSA troop—has gone above and beyond in service to her community through her Eagle Project.

Sophia recently completed a heartwarming and impactful service initiative: a Birthday Box collection drive that resulted in 250 kits filled with cake mix, frosting, candles, birthday cards, and banners. These cheerful kits are designed to help families in need celebrate birthdays with joy and dignity.

Sophia’s original goal was to create 150 Birthday Boxes for Harmony House, a shelter for women and their children operated by Family & Children's Aid in Danbury. But thanks to an outpouring of support from the community, she exceeded expectations and delivered an additional 100 boxes to Daily Bread Food Pantry, also in Danbury.

“This project was about more than just assembling boxes,” Sophia shared. “It was about making sure every child—no matter their circumstances—has a chance to feel special on their birthday.”

Sophia rallied her fellow Scouts and friends, leading volunteers in collecting supplies outside of Stop & Shop, and organizing group packing sessions to bring the kits together. She credits her success to the power of teamwork and the generosity of the Ridgefield community.

Her project is the final requirement in her journey to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout—the highest and most prestigious honor in Scouts BSA. Sophia has been an active member of Troop 19 for four years. The troop’s name honors the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, symbolizing the opportunities now available to girls through scouting.

Troop 19 is an adventure-driven troop, committed to monthly outdoor excursions including backpacking, rappelling, and bike trips. Sophia is no stranger to these challenges: she has completed a 20-mile hike, earned 22 merit badges, and even participated in a week-long Sea Base adventure in the Virgin Islands.

In addition to her dedication to scouting, Sophia is a member of Ridgefield High School’s varsity cheer team and volunteers with Special Olympics, making her a standout leader in and out of school. Sophia’s Eagle Project is a shining example of youth leadership, compassion, and the enduring spirit of community service.
