Ridgefield Teen Leads Equipment Drive for Young Athletes in Need

For the third year in a row, Ridgefield High School student Sophia Cappiello is stepping up to the plate to support young athletes across the country. Through her softball and baseball equipment drive, Sophia is collecting gently used and new gear for Pitch In for Baseball and Softball, a nonprofit that provides essential equipment to underserved youth so they can play the games they love safely and confidently.

Sophia’s inspiration for the drive is simple but deeply felt: to help remove the financial barriers that often keep children from participating in team sports. “Many young athletes are passionate about the game but don’t have access to the gear they need,” she said. “I want to help change that.”

This year’s drive runs throughout May, with a primary collection site located at the Ridgefield Recreation Center. Please note: due to weather-related changes, the Rec Center will be the only drop-off location this week.

Donations will be accepted at the Ridgefield Rec Center NOW through May 17. Weather permitting, additional collection boxes will also be placed at the RHS varsity softball field and the Fitzgerald Baseball field later this month.

Sophia’s message to the community is clear: “This drive can’t happen without your help. If you have any gently used or new softball and baseball equipment, please consider donating—it could make all the difference for a child who just wants to play.”
