Southwest Cafe: A Ridgefield Treasure Honored as Best Mexican Restaurant by Connecticut Magazine

For over 37 years, Southwest Cafe has been a staple in Ridgefield, serving authentic and flavorful Mexican cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Recently, this beloved establishment earned the prestigious title of Best Mexican Restaurant by Connecticut Magazine. For owner Barbara Nevins, this accolade is a testament to the dedication of her loyal staff and the vibrant community that Southwest Cafe calls home.

A Team That Feels Like Family

“I couldn’t do it without my long-time staffers—five of whom have been with me for over 26 years,” shared Nevins. “Their commitment is what makes this place feel like home to so many.”

Nevins believes her team’s dedication is reflected in every guest’s dining experience, from the carefully crafted dishes to the friendly atmosphere that has kept locals and visitors returning for decades.

Giving Back to the Community

Southwest Cafe doesn’t just serve food; it serves the community. Each summer, the restaurant sponsors the Southwest Cafe Margarita 5K, a much-anticipated Ridgefield tradition. Proceeds from the race benefit Ability Beyond Disability, a nonprofit that provides support and services to individuals with disabilities.

“We also support the arts whenever possible,” said Nevins, referring to the restaurant’s involvement with A.C.T. of Connecticut and The Ridgefield Playhouse. “People come from all over to attend these events, and they usually go to dinner before a show. It helps restaurants in town tremendously.”

A Cozy Dining Experience

Step into Southwest Cafe, and you’ll find a cozy, folk art-inspired dining area decorated with pieces by Nevins’ friends from Taos and local artist Erin Nazzaro, whose vibrant, colorful works bring life to the space. “Erin is a great colorist, and her art adds so much to our atmosphere,” Nevins said.

In the warmer months, the cafe’s outdoor seating offers a perfect spot to enjoy a meal al fresco, adding to the charm of this Ridgefield gem. On Saturday evenings, diners are treated to the sounds of Kevin Ryan’s jazz guitar, providing the perfect soundtrack for an unforgettable dining experience.

A Legacy of Excellence

Being named the best Mexican restaurant in the state is more than just an accolade for Barbara Nevins and her team—it’s recognition of decades of hard work, community involvement, and a passion for sharing the vibrant flavors of Mexican cuisine with Ridgefield.

As Nevins looks ahead, her focus remains the same: maintaining Southwest Cafe as a beloved gathering place and a source of pride for the Ridgefield community. “This recognition means so much, but it’s the people—our staff, our customers, and our community—that make it all worthwhile,” she said.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, Southwest Cafe promises more than a meal—it offers a rich blend of flavor, hospitality, and heart that has made it a Ridgefield treasure for over three decades.
