Why Small Businesses  Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community.

Meet  Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgensen, founder of Insight Counseling

Why did you start your business?

Before opening our outpatient office I had already worked in the mental health and addiction field with teens and young adults in hospital settings for 18 years.  I opened Insight Counseling LLC in Ridgefield in 2000 to meet the needs of local families and to create a resource to help teens before they needed inpatient or residential care. We have been so grateful for our growth and success in Ridgefield for 24 years. We love this community.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our best-selling service is our assessments of all at-risk issues in young people. We take the time to uncover the whole picture and work very closely with the schools and other providers to make teens and young adults return to safety and functioning as soon as possible. We emphasize self-efficacy and change and help parents to reestablish loving authority in their homes. My staff is expert at working with young people who may be 'resistant' to getting help, and who have been stuck in maladaptive patterns. We are unique in that we can see families quickly, especially in a crisis with our ASSIST program. ASSIST stands for Adolescent Substance Abuse Screening Intervention Support and treatment referral Service and we can respond on the same or next day to families in crisis. We also offer highly effective groups for teens and young adults (see image).

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We are huge supporters of local businesses and resources. We work closely with other healthcare providers in town and use local spaces and food for our events and activities. We miss some of the local resources Ridgefield has lost, like Squash’s!

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

During COVID we had to pivot of course, and first we treated people online but then began running our groups and individual sessions in safe and private outdoor settings, including getting young people out and hiking. It was great and clients really enjoyed this. We have to develop new programs and interventions to respond to new risks young people face, for example vaping and the impact of too much screen use. Our staff is really incredible at making pivots to what works best for each individual and family.
