Local Business Champion: MWD Educational Advocacy & Coaching

Meet Michelle DiMiceli, founder of MWD Educational Advocacy & Coaching

Why did you start your business?

I started my business after spending more than 25 years as a special education teacher. Over the years, I sat in countless meetings with parents who just wanted to help their children succeed, but so many of them didn’t know where to start. The special education process can be confusing, and it's not always clear what to ask or how things are supposed to work. What I began to notice was that when parents really understood their child’s strengths and challenges, they became much more confident in speaking up and making sure their child got what they needed. That realization led me to start meeting with parents outside of school meetings to walk through their child’s evaluations, whether they came from the school district or from a private provider.

For many parents, this was their first experience navigating special education, and it was a lot to take in. But once we sat down and broke things down in a way that made sense, it changed everything. I often worked with students too, if they were old enough to participate. It was amazing to see how much more empowered families felt after understanding the process and what their child needed. That’s really what inspired me to turn this into something more and create a service that helps parents become strong advocates for their children.

What is your best-selling product/service?

The service that I find most requested is educational advocacy. Every parent I have met has expressed a deep relief when they truly understand their child's learning style and needs. They feel validated and empowered to move forward. Through my years of writing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), I can see the gaps in programs and accommodations that could make a child's learning experience more productive and supportive. There is a true need for parents to know what to expect when going through the special education system and having an advocate who can explain, support and attend meetings makes all the difference.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Yes, I’ve definitely reimagined my business. MWD Educational Advocacy & Coaching used to be called Meaningful Education Support, but as I started working with more families, I realized that what I do goes far beyond just supporting the special education process. I help parents make real, meaningful changes in how they connect with their children, which often leads to a more peaceful home life. I also work with people to set goals that are realistic and achievable, and in doing that, they start to feel more confident and capable. Every now and then someone asks if I’m a therapist. I’m not, but I am an advocate and a coach who’s here to guide you, support you, and give you that gentle push when you need it. In the beginning, I would meet clients at coffee shops, community spaces, or online. Now I’m excited to have a private office in Ridgefield where we can meet in a more comfortable and confidential setting. I’m also continuing to offer virtual sessions, which gives us more flexibility and makes it easier to connect no matter where you are.

My ultimate goal is to help my clients move forward.
