On August 9, Founders Hall celebrated the taste of summer at its annual ice cream social, sponsored by Laurel Ridge Health Care Center.
With over 100 members in attendance, an assortment of ice cream with delectable toppings were served, including homemade hot fudge and whipped cream. While there are very few treats that embody the summer spirit more perfectly than ice cream, there are some health benefits associated with it.
Marianne Haynes, LCSW, Director of Social Work of Laurel Ridge, spoke about dairy products with calcium for healthier bones, probiotics to aid the immune system and dietary fiber to help digestion. Of course, low-fat options and sugar-free treats are preferable to help manage weight and diabetes. However, the cool, sweet taste of the delectable dessert at this event was just as much fun to make as it is was for the palate. The wine basket raffle winner was member Sandy Corday, who runs the ‘Drop-in Quilting’ class on Tuesdays at Founders Hall.
