A Day of Good Deeds in and Around Ridgefield to Help Local Organizations

Congregation Shir Shalom of Westchester and Fairfield Counties has designated Sunday, May 5, as “Shir Shalom Mitzvah Day 2019.” It is a day filled with fun and interesting activities, in which anyone can participate, to aid organizations in need of a helping hand. Hours scheduled are 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m., which includes registration, instructions, pizza lunch, work time, slide show, and wrap-up with ice cream.

“Many charitable organizations are relying on our community,” said Shir Shalom Rabbi David Reiner. “We encourage people to sign up and spread the word!”

Opportunities abound, for which volunteers can register online at http://bit.ly/shirshalom. For more information, contact Debbie Lavin and Amy Margulies at SocialAction@OurShirShalom.org.

The wide range of meaningful and enjoyable outreach activities seeking volunteers for a couple of hours on May 5 include… washing a vehicle for the Boys and Girls Club, washing windows for senior residents, making dog toys for SPCA of Briarcliff Manor, peeling and sorting crayons to be recycled for hospitalized children, knitting caps for premature infants at Northern Westchester Hospital, making fleece blankets for Kids in Crisis, baking cookies for Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, potting flowers and decorating pots for nursing homes, and spreading chips on a parking lot pathway for Shir Shalom, as well as many others.

Those who can’t register for the activities can contribute in other ways. New and gently-used children's books are being collected for Danbury Family and Children's Aid. Also needed are donations of broken crayons, new school supplies for the Community Center of Northern Westchester, and candy for U.S. military troops.

The activities will take place at various locations around town. At past Mitzvah Days attracted as many as 150 or more generous souls who volunteered their time.
