Remembering Ridgefielder Steve Carboni with Benefit Concert on June 2

When Ridgefielder Steve Carboni passed away at 70 from pancreatic cancer in December, he was widely mourned. Not just by friends and family, but by a regional community of musicians he helped build with his supportive presence at live performances.

Now that community is planning to honor Steve with a June 2nd benefit concert that will raise thousands for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Musical Friends of Steve Carboni: A Benefit Concert is being organized by Dave Goldenberg, a Ridgefield singer-songwriter, and George Mallas, a local musician, together with Alice Carboni, Steve’s wife of 44 years.

“Steve and Alice weren’t just part of the audience—they were part of the music family,” said Mallas, who co-hosts “Songwriter’s Block” a local radio show that promotes area performers. “He deserves a celebration.”

With Alice’s support, Goldenberg and Mallas recruited some of Steve Carboni’s favorite performers to participate in the event. It will take place on Sunday, June 2, from 3-6, at The Heights at Brother Vic’s, a music venue in nearby South Salem.

Venue owner Vic Ponzo is contributing use of the venue, and local merchants are contributing items for raffle.

“Steve would love this,” said Alice. “He might be embarrassed by the attention, but he was devoted to the community and to good causes.” Steve volunteered for the American Cancer Society and for the Food Pantry at Danbury’s New Hope Baptist Church. Many also remember Steve as a devoted coach of kids’ football, basketball and baseball.

Goldenberg invited all those who knew and cared for Steve to come “not for a memorial, but for an afternoon of great music—and a great cause.”

Tickets are $25 and are available online only, at musicalfriends.eventbrite.com. They can also be ordered by searching for the Facebook page “Musical Friends of Steve Carboni Benefit Concert.” The Facebook page also provides an option for those unable to attend to make a direct donation.
