A “Hair Raiser” is simply a fun term coined by Whip Salon to indicate a fundraising day. The salon will contribute 10% of all service sales across all locations to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) on Tuesday, November 14th in honor of National Diabetes Day to the search for a cure of T1D. Our staff will be showing support by wearing blue across all 7 locations. Book your appointment to help contribute and show your support to this important cause. What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 Diabetes occurs when your body stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Managing the disease is a constant struggle that involves monitoring your blood-sugar level, administering insulin, and carefully balancing these insulin doses with your eating and activity. People with T1D may experience dangerously high or low blood-glucose levels that can, in extreme cases, be life threatening even with careful monitoring.
“My now 14-year-old son was diagnosed with Type 1 in 2021,” Amy Pal. "I want to help my son and everyone living with T1D to find a cure, as well as help educate and spread awareness about the difference between Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is hereditary and irreversible, and once it kicks in, there’s no stopping it and it is a life-changing, life-long diagnosis.”
T1D is managed by administering short-term and long-term insulin. Short-term insulin must be taken 15 to 20 minutes before eating any carbs and the calculation needs to be right or a diabetic will have blood sugar levels that are either dangerously high or low. It is administered either by injections or a pump. The good news, there are more and more technological advances all the time that makes managing it easier.
