Saint Mary School teacher preps for her very first class

Saint Mary School alumni, Cara Capilli is gearing up to welcome 22 second grade students to her classroom! This is Cara's first year teaching after graduating from Catholic University in May where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.

I caught up with Cara yesterday at Saint Mary School where she offered to give me a sneak peek of her classroom (disclosure: I was her pre-school teacher back in the day).

Cara's classroom exudes energy (even sans 22 excited children!) The bright room is chockful of learning opportunities with a theme of the tropics is sprinkled throughout. Picture this: books, books, and more books, colorful work bins and bulletin boards, various types of chairs for every type of young learner (even a stand-up desk), reading corner, and cooperative learning stations.

"After years of playing 'classroom' in my basement, pretending to be a second-grade teacher at Saint Mary School, I'm thrilled to finally have my dream become a reality!" says Cara.

It won't be long now! In a few weeks, Cara will open her door and welcome a group of enthusiastic Saint Mary School second graders (and she can hardly wait!)

Saint Mary School has named a scholarship in the name of Cara's mom, Patti Capilli, a longtime parishioner and Saint Mary parent who passed away last year after a courageous battle with cancer. Learn more about the Patricia A. Capilli Scholarship here.
