Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Sweet T Bake Shoppe!

Three questions with Teryn Morel, founder of Sweet T Bake Shoppe.

Why did you start your business?

I started baking at a very young age. It has always been a passion of mine. I went to pastry school when I was 22 years old and baked professionally for various bakeries since then. After I got married and had kids, I decided to take some time to stay home with them. Once I got more comfortable in my new role as “mom” I started making cakes and cookies for friends and family. I would put the kids to bed and head to the kitchen and get baking.

The passion for baking was still there even after some time off. So, I decided I wanted to make a business out of it. I got a Cottage Food License and started to advertise some of my products through social media. The Ridgefield community was incredible and so supportive. Through referrals and with the help of our town's social media pages, I was able to gain some momentum and build a small business doing something I love.

What is your best-selling product/service?

My best-selling products would have to be my custom-decorated cookies. I have always been very artistic and cookies and royal icing are my favorite medium. My cookie decorating kits have also been a big seller. I love seeing what my customers and their families create! A goal for the future would be to offer cookie decorating classes.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

My business would not run as smoothly without the help of some other local businesses. I am always running to Squash's for my office supplies or Party Depot for paper goods and baking tools. Aside from utilizing local small businesses by purchasing from them, I found the biggest support is the network I have made with other small business owners. We are always trying to help each other grow by giving each other the exposure needed to expand our client base.

Even something as simple as a recommendation goes a long way. I am very grateful to have had opportunities to work with other amazing local businesses such as Sweet Bean Events, Silly Goose, and Two Blue Hens. As a business that depends greatly on word of mouth, having my baked goods showcased at an event of theirs is very helpful for growth. I am always trying to spread the word about all the amazing small businesses Ridgefield has to offer!
