Ridgefield Girl Scouts Earn Gold Awards, Honored at State-wide Ceremony

Three Ridgefield Girl Scouts – Angelina Cerulli, Caroline McGrath and Sofia Schaffer have earned the Gold Award, the highest leadership award in Girl Scouting.  They were recognized at a state-wide ceremony on June 5th in Hamden, CT.

This year’s Gold Award projects represented a diverse range of issues.

Angelina Cerulli’s initiative, “Farm to Firehouse” provides healthy food options and stress relief to first responders at the Ridgebury Fire Station #2.  Caroline McGrath tackled eating disorders by creating materials that are now part of the Ridgefield High School health curriculum.  Sofia Schaffer’s project entailed writing a book, “Hedgerow Habitats: Supporting Your Neighborhood Wildlife” which explains how hedgerows help the local ecosystems.

A Gold Award Girl Scout’s accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart as a community leader.  Nationally, less than six percent of eligible Girl Scouts earn the Gold Award. Of note, Gold award recipients who enlist in the military enter at a higher pay grade.

Along with meeting certain pre-requisites, in order to earn the Gold award, a high-school age Girl Scout must spend at least 80 hours researching and implementing a project that will have a lasting impact. Completed projects must be approved by the Gold Award Committee.

Gold award recipients are also eligible for scholarships. Alexia Anglade, who earned her Gold Award in 2021 for creating a Green Business award for Ridgefield and the greater community, was one of seven girls who received the Gold award scholarship this year from Girl Scouts of Connecticut.

Girl Scouts’ Ridgefield Service Unit also honored its Gold Award Girl Scouts as well as all middle and high school Girl Scout achievements at a ceremony on June 10th in Ballard Park.
