Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT, Tewes Cares!

Four questions with Leslie Alin Tewes, President and Chief Practitioner at Tewes Cares.

Why did you start your business?

A forehead-smacking realization is how Tewes-CARES was born. With years of experience in both the clinical and operational aspects of health care for adults and the aging, it was clear that helping people 1:1 to navigate the medical/health system and advocate for themselves and those they love was needed.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Urgent advocacy for that somewhere between hospital and home as well as consultations about a myriad of topics are the most common reasons that people contact us. Common issues/ topics:

- Disagreements about discharge planning from acute or sub-acute care;

- Down-sizing and interstate relocations often reunite aging parents with their adult children.

- Medicare & Medicaid;

- Must-Have Documents: Advance Health Care Directives, Health Care Proxy appointments, Living Wills, DNR/ Do Not Resuscitate, Financial POA…

- Long Term Care planning.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

As an active member of the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce and other relevant associations, the Tewes-CARES team has cultivated trusted resources/ referrals in Fairfield County, CT, and the Hudson River Valley in NY. For example, home care agencies, elder law/ estate attorneys, financial advisors, nursing homes/sub-acute care facilities, assisted living, creative arts therapies, and more.

Have you “reimagined” your small business?

Because of the strong belief that everyone should have their right to self-determination respected and comfortable end-of-life, I’ve recently expanded my personal and professional development to include death & dying. As a trained End-of-Life Doula, I work with those seeking to optimize physical and emotional comfort by way of support, education, vigil planning, and legacy projects.
