Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Tweak Interiors!

Four questions with Julia Frossell, founder of Tweak Interiors.

Why did you start your business?

I have had a passion for ‘tweaking’ interiors since childhood which eventually led to the creation of ‘Tweak Interiors LLC’. I'm originally from England and have been fortunate to live and work in the UK, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Ridgefield CT. Each of these moves presented me with a unique opportunity to design family homes incorporating local resources and design elements.

I was also blessed with wonderful friends and family which permitted me to hone my design skills, incorporating my insatiable appetite for travel and cultural influences into many projects.

Consequently, after making a house a home in many different locations I decided to fulfill my passion. So with a young family in tow (not easy!) I went back to University part-time to re-qualify as an Allied A.S.I.D. designer.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Often it’s the simplest ‘tweaks’ that have the biggest impact. My business is bespoke and projects vary greatly, so my services are flexible to cater to my client's style. I'm personable and approachable and consider the whole process a collaboration so I'm not imprinting my design aesthetic on them, it's a team effort.

Some projects are simple updates such as a paint refresh, reupholstering much-loved furniture pieces, or adding new accessories and others could be a full-scale bathroom, kitchen, or basement renovations. Many of my clients have busy careers or are heavily involved in volunteer and charitable commitments, or just don’t have the time they would like to devote to the whole design process.

Fortunately, this allows me to creatively manage the projects from the design concept to completion.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Ridgefield is such a wonderful ever-evolving community with many family-run generational businesses. Together with my team of tradespeople, collaboration with local businesses and realtors has been invaluable and integral to running my interior design business - Tweak Interiors.

Fabulous resources are Ridgefield Plumbing, SetnStone LLC, Casey Fuel, Wilton Floors, La Pietra Stone & Marble, Creative Tile, Olley Court and Bella Home for decorative accents, Allison Meyler Abstract Art, Mary Phelps of William Pitt Sothebys International Realty, Rodier Flowers, Ridgefield Hardware and Ridgefield Supply for paint samples. Natures Temptations for the best smoothies to keep me going in between design appointments; Silver Lining and Bluebird Estates for those one-off finds.

Cellar XV for reasonably priced fine wines after a busy week, 109 Cheese and Wine for the best selection of local and international gooey cheese, charcuterie, and there to die for the artisanal smoked salmon spread!

During Covid with the family home and a lot more design projects, I relied on some of our excellent local restaurants such as Sarah’s Wine Bar or Posa for delicious takeout meals for my family. And now things are finally returning to normal, Luc’s Café and Restaurant is always fun for the convivial ambiance and French bistro fix!

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

I am a very curious person and have a penchant for learning and self-development so the process of investing in myself and my business to stay current with the latest trends is a priority. I imagine that once my children eventually flee the nest I will have more time to focus on an online design platform incorporating a product range and unique finds from my travels.'

Julia would like to nominate Mary Phelps of William Pitt Sothebys International Realty and Allison Meyler of Allison Meyler Abstract Art to be featured next - "Two wonderful local business owners and friends who have contributed so much to the Ridgefield Community!"!
