TONIGHT: Learn About Indigenous Foodways at KTM&HC’s Taproom Tastings Virtual Program TONIGHT!

Join Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center (KTM&HC) Chief Curator Catherine Prescott and historian Mary Tsaltas-Ottomanelli, livestreaming from the historic tavern museum, as they investigate historic food and drink cultures. TONIGHT, Tuesday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m., the discussion is all about indigenous foodways, with special guest Henry Ward!

Catherine and Mary’s relaxed, conversational style is an engaging way to get unique and entertaining insights into America’s culinary histories and learn how food and drink have long been central to building and maintaining community and cultural identity.

At tonight’s program, Mary and Catherine will be joined by professional archaeologist, chef, and food historian Henry Ward to discuss the foodways of the indigenous peoples of New England and the Middle Atlantic. They will explore the indigenous foods of the region, how they influenced the cuisine of European colonists, and how colonization affected traditional indigenous foodways.

Through his research and culinary experimentation, Henry has developed numerous historically inspired recipes, many of which he shares in his book Native Chesapeake Cuisine: Recipes Inspired by the Native American Cultures of the Chesapeake Bay Region. Henry has also provided two of his recipes for program registrants to try for themselves.

Taproom Tastings: Indigenous Foodways is tonight, Tuesday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom. Registration is required. Taproom Tastings is free for all, with a suggested donation of $10. To register, go to www.keelertavernmuseum.org/events.
