The College Admissions Process for Musicians, Actors, Dancers & Visual Artists at Ridgefield Library on April 23

Ridgefield Library, Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra, Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and Ridgefield Arts Council present:

The College Admissions Process for Musicians, Actors, Dancers and Visual Artists on Sunday, April 23 at 1:00 PM.

The afternoon will begin with a general introduction to what the college application process is like for artists and how it differs from the general college admissions process.  Topics covered will include:

  • Major versus non-major
  • BA versus BFA
  • Resumes
  • Requirements such as portfolios, audition recordings

College consultant Candace Channing, who is herself an internationally acclaimed flutist, will moderate the discussion.  This will be followed by break-out sessions, where more specific questions for each of the four disciplines will be addressed by panelists that will include teachers, university professors, practitioners and students and parents who have recently been through the process.  The afternoon will conclude with refreshments and time for networking and more informal Q & A.

Panelists include: 

  • Katie Diamond and Daniel Levine - both Broadway actors and executive directors of ACT of CT
  • Jason Peck  - actor and artistic director of Thrown Stone Theatre Company; also theater director at St. Luke' school. 
  • Christopher E. Manning, Exhibitions Coordinator at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Artist and Adjunct Professor of Studio Art at Manhattanville College
  • Amy Piantaggini, Artistic Director of Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance and teacher at the Hartt School/University of Hartford
  • Heather Meachem is a former stage actress and a graduate of the Northwestern University theater program. She has lived in Ridgefield for over 20 years and her son recently went through the college application/audition process in theater/musical theater.
  • Lisa Scails is the Executive Director of the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut.  She was recently elected to The Americans for the Arts' Advisory Council.  Lisa is also the mother of a Cooper Union visual arts graduate.
