Ridgefield Historical Society Exhibit and Opening WWI: Ridgefield Answers the Call

On exhibit July 3 through 30, 2018 at the Ridgefield Library Gallery.

There will be an Opening Reception: July 7, 2018, 1 to 3 pm.

The Ridgefield Historical Society, in partnership with the Ridgefield Library, is pleased to present

WWI: Ridgefield Answers the Call, an exhibit of ten display posters, created by local graphic artist Bil Mikulewicz, which commemorates the end of WW1 and centers on the contribution Ridgefield residents made during the war. The exhibit will be on view in the Ridgefield Library Gallery during business hours from July 3 through 30, 2018. A wine and cheese reception celebrating the opening of the exhibit will take place on Saturday, July 7, from 1 – 3 pm. At the opening, visitors will have the opportunity to meet and engage with the artist and members of the Ridgefield Historical Society research team who collaborated on the exhibit: Kay Ables, Town Historian; Bunny Lancaster; Sharon Dunphy; Betsy Reid; and Sara Champion.

WWI: Ridgefield Answers the Call is a compilation of historic photographs and ephemera, researched and sourced from the Historical Society’s extensive archives, and paired with original artwork by the artist to create a colorful and engaging exhibit for all ages. Many of the posters are collages of images and text depicting Ridgefield residents and their war efforts, including the names of those who fought, information on the Women’s Land Army; and the role service animals played such as Sgt. Stubby, a Staffordshire terrier from Connecticut, whose keen sense of smell allowed him to detect enemy gas and save lives.

Ridgefield Historical Society is committed to enhancing its reputation in the community, both at the Scott House and the Peter Parley Schoolhouse, as well as in collaboration with local institutions. This program is part of Ridgefield Remembers WWI, a town-wide commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
