The Lords of 52nd Street came together in 1975 as members of Billy Joel’s original band: Liberty DeVitto on drums, Richie Cannata on saxophone and Russell Javors on rhythm guitar. Joel began putting together the band after releasing two studio albums with minimal success. He wanted “the New York sound” for his next record, Turnstiles.

Joel’s first choice to build the band around was fellow Long Islander and bass player, Doug Stegmeyer. Doug then brought in Liberty Devitto and Russell Javors, both known by Joel from the Long Island Music scene. Joel wanted a saxophonist who could play keyboards. Enter Richie Cannata. Upon joining the band, Cannata immediately went into the studio recorded the iconic Empire State love song, “New York State of Mind.”

Coined “The Lords of 52nd Street by legendary record producer, Phil Ramone, the band recorded and toured with Joel for over a decade. Their induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame prompted them to reunite after a 30-year separation.
